WHEN IT IS TIME TO LEAVE YOUR HOME
There comes a time in everyone's life that things just do not work as well as they used to. Sometimes it is one person in need or perhaps a couple that both require some assistance. Often you may not want to move in with family or give up your independence totally, like nursing homes. So what are the choices?
Senior apartment complexes are one choice. Living with others your age and total independence to come and go. The problem is that although you have given up yard work and cleaning a large home, you still have to do the shopping, schedule your appointments, take care of your medications, cook and clean. There are variations in some apartment complexes where laundry, cleaning and other amenities are available for a fee or you can just hire help as necessary.
For those that can require more assistance, there are a number of new "Assisted Care Facilities" in the area. Like an apartment, you have choices. The size of the apartment can vary, so can the level of assistance. Each variation has it's own fees per month. These facilities usually are private pay, not subsidized or Medicaid. They are also not nursing homes, not a hospital or a hospice.
Like a Senior's Apartment Complex, Assisted Living Facilities allow you to live with others your own age. Unlike many apartments, pets are allowed. Also since many may need assistance now or at some time in the future, Assisted Care facilities tend to be on one level rather than multi-floor. Like an apartment, you can come and go, have your own car, and be as self sufficient as you want or need to be. Meals, house cleaning, laundry, help with medications, to assistance in dressing, toiletry, transfers etc. are all available as needed.
Most Assisted care facilities will have LPN's, and aids; some will have an RN supervisor. You can choose to interact with your neighbors or stay in your room and watch TV, whatever is your preference or life style. If able, you can come and go as you please. You are still as independent as possible. You contract for the assistance you require and no more. As you age, care can increase or decrease depending on your health and current needs.
Normally you will pay a fee coming in and then a monthly fee thereafter based on size of apartment and staff assistance necessary. Upon taking up residence, staff will evaluate your needs and then within another two weeks to 30 days revaluate again. This is to lower or raise the standards of your care and to insure your health and comfort. I hate change, how about you? Usually it takes about 3 months for most residents to get used to the change, make friends and get into the routine of community living. Periodically, re-evaluations by staff will take place to see if you need more or less care. (Often, residents get stronger in assisted living, more interaction, regular meals, activities and medications. Something that was often lacking when living alone).
