The zodiac is comprised of 12 star constellations that were named by a 2nd century astronomer by the name of Ptolemy. The sun passes through these constellations on it's yearly journey across the sky. The imaginary belt represented by these constellations are in the path of the sun and extend within a 16 degree range; 8 degrees above or below the path of the sun. Each sign or constellation represents about 30 degrees of view from earth. 12 Constellations times 30 degrees equals the 360 degrees of view of the sky, a circle, as seen from earth.
Mesopotamia may have been the origin of the Zodiac about 2000 B.C. It is interesting to note that the constellations shift in relationship to each other and it bakes about 24,000 years for the original and correct alignment to reinstate itself. The Greeks adopted the system from the Babylonians and seem to have passed it on to other civilizations. The Chinese and Egyptians had different systems with different names, but also adopted a 12 division system of the universe. The Mayan's and Aztec also had calendar systems based on their observations of the sky. In fact, the Mayan's invented the number 0 and had a 365 day year before anyone else in the world. By the way, the year is 365.24219 days long. That is why every for years we have to have a February 29th or leap year to balance out our calendar.
