PERSONAL DESIRES VS SAFETY
Seniors love their homes. Often they take immense pride and enjoyment from their homes. Simple things like taking care of the flowers or garden, feeding the birds, or even puttering around the garage or basement workshop can bring tremendous joys to seniors. The daily routine of visiting with neighbors, walking the dog or visiting the park is comforting and also enjoyable.
However, there comes a time in everyone's life that they just can not do it anymore. Support groups can not compensate for the loss of physical or mental abilities. At that time, change is inevitable. Perhaps one partner passes away and the remaining spouse is more ill than the first. At this time, safety must be considered and a change made.
If death comes and the remaining spouse is healthy, everyone should leave the decision to stay or move to the senior. Nothing should be done for at least one year. This is to give the senior the opportunity to mourn, re-establish a new pattern of living and to make a rational decision as to what they want to do long term. Everyone should do everything in their power to allow the senior to stay independent and in their home if that is their decision and there is no immediate safety issues.
Seniors are resourceful, they have seen a lifetime of tremendous changes. They expect change and will cope if given the opportunity. Putting excessive pressure on seniors to make hasty decisions when they are already under tremendous stress is not good for them mentally or physically. So take time and make your decisions at your own pace. When it is time for you to make a change, you will know it.
Talk to your pastor, your doctor, your financial planner, your family and if you want, get a free market analysis on your home from your realtor. It cost you nothing and is is just one more factor of knowledge upon which to base good decisions. In the end, it should be your decision. Not a decision made in haste, or made to please the family. You are a grown up and you have rights too. Accommodation may have to be made to keep you in your home, but help is available. If you are too ill or too frail to stay alone, the decision is made. Your safety and your presence with the family is too important. You may not like the change, but life has it's own rewards and your family wants you to be with them as long as possible.
