INDEPENDANT BUT I CAN'T DO STAIRS!

Like the senior with the house that is too big, you have a problem with your present home. In your case you may not mind the size of the home but you have a step issue. Like them, you could convert a two story or story and a half into ranch like living. If you are in a split foyer, three or four level split, you will probably need to sell and move on.

Moving is a hard decision and you may not wish to make a move at this time. One solution is to close off the second floor of a two story home and convert a den or dining room into a first floor bedroom. This works well if there is a bath or 3/4 bath on the first floor. By converting your large two story or story and a half into a ranch life style, you may be able to use your present home for many years to come. If you are in a three bedroom ranch, you may be able to modify the smallest bedroom into a combination laundry and hobby room.

If there is not a first floor bath, you may want to explore the option of putting on an addition that will act as both a bathroom and a first floor laundry. Sometimes large closets, pantry or a small room addition can accommodate this option.

If there is no bathroom, no laundry and you can not expand, then you may have to sell and move to a ranch. Front stairs or rear stairs can be modified for ramp use for wheelchairs or walkers.
